FED Talk: Introduction to Fungi - Mythic Mushrooms

In this FED talk, Mark Dines will give a brief introduction to Fungi and tell us the set-up story of Mythic Mushrooms. Mark will then briefly describe the Mythic production processes for growth of edible mushrooms. Mark will also give a general discussion on the potential uses of white rot fungi as biopolymerisation agents. 

Dr. Mark Dines completed his undergraduate and post graduate studies at the University of Waikato and his Post Doctoral studies at the University of Sheffield (UK). Returning to New Zealand he was employed at AgResearch initially as a natural product and synthetic chemist and then retrained as a fermentation scientist .

Mark shifted to Photonz, a small biotechnology company producing fatty acids in microalgae via fermentation. After developing an interest in commercialisation, Mark the took the role of Commercialisation Manager at Fonterra Brands, and building on experience gained through working in manufacturing and quality environments, he became their Grading and Release Manager and Export and Compliance Manager. Mark moved to the Manufacturing Manager position at another small biotech company, Synthase Biotech where he was responsible for the development of a recombinant protein fermentation and purification process to generate an enzyme for use in a veterinary product. Recently Mark set up Mythic Mushrooms - the aim of this company is to investigate the commercial viability of production and local sale of edible gourmet mushrooms and explore the application of fungal technologies for development of new products.
